Transparency International Ireland, along with the Transparent Referendum Initiative, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, Dr Eoin O’Dell (Trinity College Dublin), Dr Jane Suiter (Dublin City University), Dr Theresa Reidy (University College Cork), and Professor David Farrell MRIA (University College Dublin) wrote to Malcolm Noonan Minister for State at the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government asking that the establishment of an Electoral Commission be prioritised in the next 18 months.
In the letter, the signatories:
- Highlight the need for urgent delivery of an Electoral Commission at a time when global democracies are under threat
- Recall the progress towards an electoral commission achieved by Minister for State Noonan's predecessors and colleagues and urge that this momentum be continued
- Request that the Department publish a breakdown of the timeline for the establishment of the Commission.
