National Integrity Index - Local Authorities 2018
The following pages present the results, analysis and data from Transparency International (TI) Ireland’s National Integrity Index (NII) on Local Authorities. This index was designed to assess the systems and practices to promote integrity in each of Ireland’s 31 local authorities, based on the categories of Transparency, Accountability and Ethics, and to rank the local authorities accordingly. The index is based on research carried out between July 2017 and February 2018.
The index on Local Authorities is the first in a series of National Integrity Indices. More on the series can be found in the 'Report' section.
Above you will see a map showing the 31 local authority areas in Ireland. Clicking on a particular county or city will provide summary information for the respective local authority, as well as a link to a page with detailed results for that local authority. The lightest colours (yellow) indicate better performance in the ranking, while the darkest colours indicate much room for improvement.
In addition to the map and table, the menu bar on the right will direct you to much more information. This includes the Interactive Table page, which has an interactive table of results; the Report page, which presents the key findings and recommendations of the study; the Indicators page, which outlines the significance, marking scheme and source for each of the study’s 30 indicators; the Methodology page, which provides a comprehensive description of the study’s methodology; and lastly, the Toolkit page, which has templates and checklists to assist local authorities in promoting proactive publication on their websites.
The below table presents the ranking and total score of each local authority in the index. The ‘Overall Score’ column is a percentage of each local authority’s total points out of 30, rounded to the nearest whole number (so Galway City for example received 21 out of 30 possible points, hence 70%.) A more detailed breakdown of the table and points can be found on the Interactive Table page, while the assessment of each local authority can be found by clicking on the respective council’s name in the table.
