You may have noticed that we have added a question mark to the title of the last post. We’re asking for clarification on the Government’s plans for whistleblower legislation and will bring you news as soon as we get it. In the meantime, we understand the Government will hold a referendum on T.D. privilege and the power of Oireachtas inquiries at the same time as the referendum on judges pay and the Presidential election.
It could mean that the outcomes of both the Abbeylara and Howlin Supreme Court judgements could be addressed so that Oireachtas inquiries could make findings of fact and T.D.s could protect the identity of whistleblowers that come to them with information. Any move to protect the confidential exchange of important information to T.D.s would be a welcome one - especially when complemented with a universal whistleblower charter. RTE News covered the story briefly today.
